On Fans
Interviewer: So what do you think of your fans?
Johanna: Oh, they bring me great joy. I like to imagine the gothlings being thrown into a cage of hungry lions before bed every night.

"I once was stalked by this guy who thought he was a vampire and he ran an internet cult. Then he tried to burn down my house. I think he's still in a mental hospital."

Interviewer: Why do you call your fans "fanthings"?
Johanna: Well, until they evolve out of their parents' basement, they don't get a gender. But I jest—I really do love my fans, after all, they call me the authorthing back.

On Her Books
"People say I'm a hack and that I'm only popular because of my past. This is news to me because I didn't realize that my readers had nightmares about badly written prose beating them over the head."

"Okay, this one parent says my books should be banned because they gave her ten year old nightmares. Now my question is, why is a ten year old reading horror meant for adults?"

"It was pretty creepy when I was finally released from Arkham and read the reviews for my first novel. The reviews nicknamed me 'The Master of Fear' and I thought, Oh my God, they've found me out."

On Herself
"Yes, I did horrible things years ago, but I wasn't in my right mind. Well, you could argue that I'm still not in my right mind—but hey at least the only way I cause nightmares now is through my writing."

"For over ten years, I was called insane and was sedated so much that I couldn't think. Now people praise me for my genius. I don't get it."

"The most obnoxious thing in the world is not being called insane. It's having men come up to me and say that I need a real man. I'm sorry, but I don't need a 'real' man. I'm man enough for myself even if I lack the equipment."

"What am I? Well, I've been called insane, a freak and a butch lesbian amongst other things. I call myself an androgynous horror writer, but otherwise I try not to label myself."

"Why would anyone want to be me? I'm loud, obnoxious and gay. Oh wait, that's the in thing now, isn't it?"
